  Creating a new lawn

The first decision in creating a new lawn is it to determine its uses. Lawns are focused around three main types of use:

The fine ornamental lawn with is created from fine lawn grasses. This type of lawn is suited to areas that need to look good and only receive minimal use, which are limited to sitting on and walking on.

Secondly a lawn that is created to withstand a large amount of use from your children or receives a large amount of use as a path or access area. This type of lawn is normal a combination of the finer grasses and the tougher grasses such as ryegrass.

Finally there is the lawn which has been created to overcome an existing problem such as a wet or shady areas. Lawns created to conquer such problems normally have a standard mixture of grasses but with the addition of grass species that that have natural adapted to the problem conditions.

How we prepare your new Lawn

Ground preparation is vital to the future of your new lawn. Inadequately prepared and unfertilized ground will never give satisfactory results. We will remove existing turf, turn the soil over and where required rotavate ensuring the ground is free of any debris, stones, weeds or old turf.

If required a pre-turfing fertilizer may be applied and raked into the soil to increase grass growth. The ground will be raked over to produce a smooth surface and at this stage we will either go over it lightly with a roller or by foot to smooth the surface so making the ground firm but not compact.

Mowing

We recommend that you do not mow your new turf until it has rooted. This can be easily checked by lifting up a corner of turf to see if the roots have attached to the soil. Once this has happened we will come back at a convenient time to cut the grass as we will set your lawn mowers to the highest setting as it is very important that the lawn is not scalped during early mowing.

We recommend that you mow your new lawn often, each time removing no more than one third of the grass height. Once established the grass height can be reduced gradually to your ideal level. Optimum heights are between 14mm and 36mm. If you would like us to come out on a weekly, fortnightly or monthly basis to cut your grass please feel free to contact us.
